Living in the villiage of Small Elm, Tidbit (a Trollick) spends a lot of time either in his apprenticeship as a mage, with his uncle, or helping at the inn that his Aunt Chola owns. In his spare time, Tidbit sneaks into the hidden world that he found under the inn. Caverns that go on endlessly; which prove to be the remains of an ancient civilization where he finds two books that had been left behind by those that had been living there. When his uncle is summoned by Queen Neenee to the great city, Tidbit is taken along as well.
On the way to the city, they encounter a horrendous storm, which turns out to be the spell-weaving of the very force that had (centuries before) made all of the beings live in the very caverns that Tidbit had been exploring. They take shelter at an inn and it is there that Tidbit begins to understand the real power within him. Gwneuthurwr, an immortal, is chosen by the other five immortals to either destroy Tidbit or train him. There are seven earthbound, great mages that must come together with the six immortals to banish the Destroyers and it is in many kingdoms and with many strange beings that Tidbit finds himself aligned with to save them all.
